The objectives and details of Gokula

GOKULA BANSURI GURUKULA TRUST(R.)
Shiranala

An appeal:

Bansuri or the flute is one among the ancient musical instruments of India. Bansuri has a unique reverence and value owing to its epical and historical background. This instrument was being used only in folk and background music till the last century. Afterwards because of the huge efforts of several great flautists now bansuri has attained the status of a solo instrument in hindusthani music. Its sweet melody attracts everybody. Though a bansuri looks simple to look at it is not that easy to play it. Hence an effort to help the interested and talented students to learn the art of bansuri playing is being put in the form of Gokula Bansuri Gurukula.

Why a Gurukula?

In olden days students used to go to the place/ashram of guru for any education. But with the changed socio-economic situation this too has changed. However, the traditional gurukul system of training is prevailing in performing art fields like music, dance…etc. even today. Most of the today’s eminent performing musicians and upcoming artistes have received their training under this system only. This fact indicates the necessity of the gurukul system.

About Gokula:

As the name itself implies, this Gurukula has been set up for learning the art of bansuri playing. The Gokula is located amidst the clean, green and calm atmosphere of Shiranala, a small village of Yellapur taluk. Though Gokula has been set up under the rural atmosphere, it is well connected with road and has the facilities of telephone, post office,..etc. Here the traditional gurukul system of training is being followed to train the students in the art of bansuri playing with individual attention and focus towards performance. Formally inaugurated on 25/05/2009 by Pt.Venkatesh Godkhindi, the Gokula is being run under a registered public charitable trust.

About the guide at Gokula:

The person behind the vision and implementation of the Gokula is Shri Nagaraj Hegde Shiranala, a young flautist. Hailing from a music loving family, Nagaraj was interested in music since his childhood, which he learnt formally with his college education. Because of his interest and dedication for bansuri, he left the job of a bank officer and has settled down at his native. He has been trained under the able guidance of Pt.Venkatesh Godkhindi, one of the front ranking flautists and also a vocalist. Along with the experience of a supporting flautist with his guru in many prestigious music concerts Nagaraj is also a successful solo performer within and out of Karnataka. Academically a postgraduate with gold medal in agriculture, Nagaraj has Sangeet Visharad from Akhila Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal to his credit. Being an approved artiste of A.I.R., he is training the interested students since last 4-5 years.

Objectives of the Gokula:

Ø To the students who have attained performing level. To teach the art of bansuri playing for interested, talented students in the gurukul system.
Ø To arrange music concerts so that the students get an opportunity to learn by watching the good artistes’ performance on the stage.
Ø To provide an opportunity and experience of the stage
Ø To set up a library of books and audio-visual collections which may help the students to become good artistes.

For systematic and continuous running of the Gokula Bansuri Gurukula financial support is very much important along with efforts and interest. The Gokula is dependent on donors for its financial needs. Donors may help the Gokula in any one or more of the following ways:

· Donation to the corpus fund.
· Donation of musical instruments/equipments needed or monitory help for the same.
· Donation of books required for the library or monitory help for the same.
· Donation for collection, usage and maintenance of audio and video collections.
· Donation for the annual maintenance of the Gurukula.
· Part or full sponsorship of music programmes.

v Donors who donate Rs.5000/- or more will be honoured on the annual day music programme of the respective year.

The donations for the above purposes will be utilized for that purpose only. Here by we request the donors to donate generously and help us in this noble deed.

With regards,
Yours faithfully

My thoughts and dreams

Being a performing flautist now I have started a gurukul to teach the art of bansuri playinng to the interested students. Named as Gokula, the gurukul has about ten students at present. It is being run by a charitable trust. We need financial help from the interested donors for the successful running and to realise its objectives. The objectives and other details about the gurukul can be gone through a separate post. If you have any suggestions/advices, please let me know.
